The Ultimate AI Checklist: Don't Risk Falling Behind by Missing These 7 Critical Skills

As more people become aware of generative AI technology, the curiosity of how these tools can be integrated in their professional and personal lives increases.

At first glance, the AI creations can feel magical.

Or, scary.

Or, amazing.

Each person has a unique initial reaction, of which will likely keep change over the course of days and weeks.

As you continue to use AI tools to help you solve complex problems or help find information, keep these seven critical skills in mind:

  1. Identify and define the problem: Start by understanding the problem or task that you want to solve using AI. Clearly define the objectives and requirements, including the type of end product you will need and the desired outcome. I have found that "less is not always more" in this case. Be specific. Be detailed.
  2. Evaluate available AI tools: Research and evaluate the available AI tools and applications that can help you solve the problem or task. Consider factors such as the type of data being used, the level of accuracy required, and the complexity of the problem.
  3. Select the right tool for the job: Once you have evaluated the available AI tools, select the one that is most appropriate for your specific problem or task.
  4. Customize the tool: Learn how to use prompts or customize and configure the AI tool to meet your specific needs and preferences. Adjust settings, add new features, or integrate the tool with other software or systems. You won't be able to do this with all tools. And, you might need more advanced technical proficiency. But if you find you can change parameters and settings, you might as well experiment.
  5. Practice with the tool: Use the AI tool on a regular basis, practicing with it to develop a greater level of proficiency. Input data, design and run queries, and analyze results. While I subscribe to more than a handful, I tend to use the same 3-4 consistently and regularly.
  6. Stay up-to-date on advancements: Stay informed about the latest developments and advancements in AI technology. Read email newsletters (just like this one!), follow social media channels, attend conferences and workshops, and participate in online forums and communities.
  7. Collaborate with others: Collaborate with other users and experts in the field to share knowledge and best practices, work together to solve complex problems, and leverage the expertise of others to improve outcomes.
  8. Understand ethical considerations: Consider the ethical implications of AI use, including issues such as bias, privacy, and accountability. Work to ensure that AI is used in a responsible and ethical way.
